This is an excerpt from a much longer piece in progress called The Timeline Project, essentially a detailed year-by-year list of concerts I have attended and other noteworthy events in my life. This is just a teeny tiny scratch on the surface of the tip of a rather large iceberg. In the future I will elaborate and embellish some of the better stories. At the time, I was working at Record Bar in Tri-County Mall just north of Cincinnati and playing with my teenage Punk Band the Speed Hickeys. -rh * 1987:
January 7, 1987 – Die Kreuzen & Manwitch at Bogart’s
January 16, 1987 – The Reduced, Those Jughead Apaches (SS-20 acoustic Country side project), and Snare & the Idiots at the Jockey Club, Newport, KY
March 6, 1987 – Husker Du at Bogart’s
March 22, 1987 – Iggy Pop & The Pretenders at Hara Arena, Dayton, OH My first Iggy show! I had a crushing migraine headache in the general admission melee on the crowded floor right in front of the stage. Immediately after Iggy’s performance I blacked out and woke up in the lobby concessions area where my friend Christian was splashing water on my face. The houselights dimmed once again and the Pretenders took the stage. Before they played a note, Chrissie Hynde said, "Tell you what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna kiss the stage." A nightly tribute paid to Mr. Pop on that tour.
April 5, 1987 – Seduce & the Necros at Bogart’s
April 21, 1987 – Motorhead at Bogart’s
April 29, 1987 – Butthole Surfers & Manwitch at Bogart’s
April 30, 1987 – U2 & Lone Justice at the Pontiac Silverdome, Pontiac, MI I attended this show with my high school pal Christian Banker. That day, I drove from Cincinnati to pick up Christian in Athens, Ohio, then we drove to Michigan for the concert and drove BACK the same night… I was absolutely SHOCKED to find this show in its entirety on YouTube:
May 6, 1987 – Suicidal Tendencies at Bogart’s
May 9, 1987 – Life Sentence at the Jockey Club
May 22, 1987 – Henry Rollins at Bogart’s
It's great fun looking back at those days, realizing for example that in May of 1987 alone I attended performances by no fewer than three legendary Punk bands.
June 12, 1987 – Anthrax & Metal Church at Bogart’s
I attended this Anthrax show with a friend from Norway named Jan who was visiting the US. Early in the evening I lost him in the mosh pit and I spent the whole night worried that he had been injured, crushed, or possibly obliterated by the violent dancing of a typical Thrash Metal audience. Of course he popped up bug eyed and smiling after the house lights came up, shirtless and covered in sweat. Apparently he was in the shit, mixing it up and holding his own with the rest of the mob for almost the entire show. We still laugh about it to this day.
July 3, 1987 – The Bears at Bogart’s
July 11, 1987 – Ace Frehley & White Lion at Bogart’s
July 13, 1987 – Lords of the New Church & Human Zoo at Bogart’s
July 19, 1987 – The Exploited, Dr. No & the Doughboys at Bogart’s
July 24, 1987 – Corrosion Of Conformity & Dag Nasty at the Jockey Club
Look at July... Holy shit, what a great month for concerts that was. Keep in mind tickets were much cheaper in those days. I probably got in to all five of those shows for well under a hundred bucks total.
September 13, 1987 – Georgia Satellites at Bogart’s
September 14, 1987 – The Replacements at Bogart’s
Having just played the same venue the night before but finding themselves with a night off, members of the Georgia Satellites were seen in the crowd at this Replacements' show.
September 21, 1987 – Suicidal Tendencies at Bogart’s
October 6, 1987 – Redd Kross, the Membranes & Afghan Whigs at Bogart’s
Here's another mind blowing YouTube discovery: the complete 10/6/87 performance by Redd Kross at Bogart's!
November 11, 1987 – Red Hot Chili Peppers & Faith No More at Bogart’s
November 17, 1987 – The Replacements at Memorial Auditorium, Athens, Ohio
