George Cables “Looking For The Light”
Muse FX Records
2003
Looking For The Light is the 18th release for pianist, composer and bandleader George Cables. Having worked in the past with such jazz greats as Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins and countless others, Cables has accumulated tremendous performance and composition skills along the way. Most of the album’s ten tracks are mellow post-bop tunes in the style of McCoy Tyner or Horace Silver, only occasionally venturing into the darker abstractions of the Monk school. Cables’ memorable compositions range from the slow-burning tango “Senorita De Aranjuez”, to the solo piano ballad “Helen’s Mothers Song”, and the rhythmic hopscotch of “E.V.C.”. Soprano sax player Gary Bartz shines, whether shadowing Cables’ piano melodies or soloing with searching grace. But the real star here is Cables’ unique arrangements, never letting any of his excellent material - whether tango, bop, or ballad - ever slip into cliches.

Love George Cables especially his stuff with Art Pepper. One favorite is George Cables Trio – Whisper Not.
