Low Skies
“All The Love I Could Find” (2006)
Like a landscape of Big Sky Montana painted with electric guitars, Low Skies conjures a spacious expanse of sound. Forgoing the catchy chorus approach to pop songwriting, they employ atmospheric broad strokes instead. Four songs into “All The Love I Could Find”, singer Chris Salveter relents. Setting aside the deliberately obtuse vocal meanderings for a moment, something akin to a hook is finally revealed and it’s a subversive and subtle charmer. Almost all the other tunes are melancholy exercises in soul searching and existential odes to the futility of romance. Amidst a jangly din of guitars and brilliantly understated drumwork, Salveter’s Thom Yorke-ish yelp delivers longing and liberal doses of brutal honesty and scathing self-analysis. With vocal fire and passion not unlike Jeff Buckley, Salveter’s sonic sob is simply: “I want to be burned, and kept from the water cuz I have to learn what it’s like to put all of your faith in someone who’s lost”. Low Skies’ lyrics are bleak, abstract, graphic, occasionally profane, and always insightful observations on the torturous, inextinguishable torch we all carry for some unrealized potential, some unrealistic ideal, some justice undone, or just someone, somewhere.

Interesting in that I am a fire sign and my narcissistic ex abuser was a water sign (but she doesn't believe in that kind of stuff of course).
