I was a fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers back then. I saw them many times back in the day. But I went to their show at Bogart's in 1987 because I really wanted to see the opening act: Faith No More. I love their first two records with Chuck Mosley on vocals. (This was before Mike Patton was in the band.) That evening it was impossible to know exactly what was going on, but I pieced the story together from first hand eye witness accounts in the days after the show. Faith No More's opening set went on for almost 90 minutes. They kept looking at the stage monitor engineer between songs and he would encourage them to keep playing. Apparently the Chili Peppers' bus broke down on the way to the show. They got on the side of the highway with their guitars strapped on and hitched a ride to Bogart's with a guy that I met later. He was on his way to the show and could not believe that he saw them standing by the side of the highway with their guitars. Not sure who had the mushrooms, but apparently this fan and the band shared some in the car on the way to Bogart's. When they arrived at the club, the Chili Peppers came in the front door with their guitars strapped on and climbed up on the stage and danced around during Faith No More's last song. Already I was happier than a pig in shit because the band I really came to see played well over an hour. After Faith No More's set the curtain closed. Half hour later the curtain opened to reveal Faith No More's equipment still on the stage. The Chili Peppers came out and plugged into Faith No More's amps and played their drums. Apparently their gear and all their stage costumes and backdrop were still on the bus that had broken down on the highway. So the Chili Peppers played in their street clothes, cut off sweatpants and raggedy t-shirts. They proceeded to play at least three hours, pulling out all the stops as a way to apologize for not having all their usual stage gear & backdrop etc. By this time in their career they had already retired the "snuffaluppagus". But, being something of a special occasion, they came out for their encore each of them wearing only one sock on their junk and nothing else. An epic night. One of the best shows I ever saw at Bogart's.
